About Ancient Chinese

A blog for anyone curious about China — its dynasties and emperors, its language, its costume dramas, and the places where all of it still lives today.

What is Ancient Chinese?

AncientChinese.net is a blog about Chinese history, culture, language, drama, and travel. Whether you found your way here through a costume drama, a curiosity about the dynasties, an interest in learning Mandarin, or a trip you're planning — this site is built to give you a deeper, more accurate way into the subject than a five-minute search usually provides.

We cover four main areas:

  • History — the dynasties, emperors, and turning points that shaped Chinese civilization, explained in plain language on our history hub.
  • Drama — guides to the costume dramas and wuxia epics worth your time, from palace intrigue to time-travel fantasy, on our drama hub.
  • Language — practical, beginner-friendly explainers on Mandarin, Cantonese, pinyin, and tones, on our language hub.
  • Travel — guides to the historical sites and practicalities of seeing China in person, on our travel hub.

Why we built this

Chinese history and drama are endlessly rich subjects — and also frequently flattened online into listicles, mistranslated trivia, and recycled "facts" that don't survive a second look (no, the Great Wall isn't visible from space). Our goal is to do better: give you context that actually helps, whether that means knowing which dynasty a drama is set in, what a character's name actually sounds like in Mandarin, or which historical site is worth the detour.

On accuracy: Chinese history spans thousands of years and dozens of dynasties — and popular dramas often compress, dramatize, or invent details for the sake of story. Where we can, we try to be clear about which is which, so you can enjoy the fiction and still come away with a true picture of the history behind it.

What you'll find here

A note on this site's history

AncientChinese.net previously existed as a fan community focused on Chinese costume dramas. This iteration of the site is a fresh start with all-new, original content — built around the same underlying interest in Chinese history and drama, but reimagined as a blog for a broader audience.
